I’m sure that, at some time or another, was attracted to a bottle of wine by something that appeared on the wine label. It might have been a logo or design, or some other bit of information on the label that made us pick it up. I’m also pretty sure that at some point you also returned a bottle to where you found it, because you didn’t understand something on the label. It might even have been the same bottle!

Worldwide, Italy is unrivaled in terms of diversity of wine production. As a nation that has been producing wine since the Etruscans and Mycenaeans first introduced vine plantings in Southern Italy, it is a country rich in viticultural history. Yet, despite more than twenty-three centuries of wine production, it was not until 1861 that the twenty previously autonomous regions of Italy became a unified nation, and not until 1963 was a unified system of control over Italian wine production put into place.
